Aleksandar Mitrović takes over as Serbia's captain, addressing speculation about his absence and previewing their upcoming match against Switzerland.
Aleksandar Mitrović has been named the new captain of the Serbian national team, taking the armband from Nikola Milenković, who led the team in recent matches against Spain and Denmark. With Mitrović back in the squad, Serbia hopes to boost their scoring potential.
Mitrović also clarified rumors about his absence last month, dismissing talk of a boycott. He emphasized that his focus is now entirely on the upcoming match against Switzerland, scheduled for Saturday at 20:45.
"I think we started off scoring a lot but conceding too," Mitrović noted. "Now we’re not conceding much, but we’re not scoring much either. Hopefully, we’ll find a balance and be strong on both ends.
The game against Switzerland will be tough; we’ve both had player changes since the last time we met. It’s going to be a challenging match against a very good team with a good coach, as we saw at the Euros. It would be great to win and, hopefully, get a few goals too. The key is to play well as a team—when that happens, chances and goals will follow."
Reflecting on recent matches without him, Mitrović acknowledged the contributions of newer players. "We’ve played tactically perfect in the past few games, and we were just a bit unlucky not to win.
We looked compact and solid, dangerous on the counter-attacks. The game against Spain, the European champions, was a boost for us. Everyone expected us to concede three or four goals, but we showed what we want to become in the future. That match was an inspiration for how we should look moving forward."
Mitrović’s return as captain brings fresh hope for more goals and solid play as Serbia gears up for the next phase of competition.
