Modrić stuns at Osijek press conference, refusing to confirm Milan transfer as he puts all club talks on hold to focus fully on Croatia and upcoming qualifiers.
Ahead of Croatia’s World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic, Luka Modrić made headlines with a surprise statement at a press conference in Osijek, where he appeared alongside national team coach Zlatko Dalić.
Modrić, whose contract with Real Madrid has expired, was widely expected to sign for AC Milan after the Club World Cup. But he delivered an unexpected twist when he said that he is putting all talks about his club future on hold.
"I can't say anything on that subject. There were calls, there were contacts, but I’ve put it all aside. I want to focus on the national team and Real. I haven’t made any decision and I don’t know when I will," said Modrić, visibly determined to shut out the speculation.
With Croatia chasing another major tournament appearance, Modrić explained that media noise doesn't affect his focus—and that he expects the same from his teammates. "It doesn’t disturb my concentration, and I don’t think it disturbs others either."
Looking ahead to the crucial qualifier against Czech Republic, he said: "We entered the qualifiers well. We face the toughest opponent. We’ll have to be at our best. The World Cup is a huge motivation. I feel good, I’m healthy, and I have the desire to play. Whether I’ll play next summer depends on where I continue my career."
Coach Zlatko Dalić echoed Modrić’s focus and praised the veteran’s leadership: "This is the most difficult match in the group. We must be aggressive, patient, and disciplined. Luka leads by example. His form and attitude are crucial."
Dalić also revealed team news: Luka Sučić will miss the game due to personal matters, Fruk is still uncertain, while Josko Gvardiol and Ivan Perišić are fit and ready. "Ivan was fantastic against Gibraltar. We missed him dearly last year," he added.
Croatia face the Czech Republic tomorrow in what could be a decisive step toward World Cup qualification—and possibly Modrić’s final run with the national team.
