Luka Modrić’s future at Real Madrid hangs in the balance as club president Florentino Perez leaves his contract renewal up to incoming coach Xabi Alonso.
According to Marca, club president Florentino Perez has already made it clear to the Croatian veteran that his future at the club will be decided by Xabi Alonso, who is set to take over as head coach following the end of the La Liga season.
“It depends on him whether you stay or not,” Perez reportedly told Modrić, in reference to Alonso, signaling a firm shift in club policy. After 13 years of loyal service and countless trophies, Modrić is now in limbo as he awaits a conversation with Real’s incoming boss.
Modrić, 38, signed a one-year extension last summer with hopes of staying at the Bernabéu for one final season before likely retirement. Despite being a legendary figure at the club, this season has brought major changes and disappointing results, pushing Perez to clear the path for a generational transition—including the departure of coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Alonso will be formally introduced as Real Madrid’s new manager in ten days, after the La Liga season concludes. Before then, he is expected to hold talks with Modrić to clarify the veteran’s role—or lack thereof—moving forward.
Although Modrić is still expected to play in the upcoming Club World Cup, his long-term future at Madrid will depend entirely on Alonso’s plans. Perez has reportedly assured the new manager full control over squad decisions, reinforcing that Modrić’s stay is no longer guaranteed.
