Luka Modrić is set for surgery after a serious facial injury, casting doubt on his World Cup participation with Croatia.
Luka Modrić faces a serious setback ahead of the World Cup after suffering a double cheekbone fracture during AC Milan’s clash with Juventus.
The injury occurred after a collision with Manuel Locatelli during an aerial duel. Modrić continued briefly but was clearly struggling before leaving the pitch in the 81st minute, with Ardon Jashari coming on as his replacement.
AC Milan quickly confirmed the severity of the injury.
"The tests performed today revealed a fracture of the left cheekbone that will require surgery, scheduled for the next few hours. Further details will be communicated after the operation."
The timing creates a major concern for Croatia, with the tournament approaching fast. Modrić, now 40, is preparing for what is expected to be his final major international competition.
Croatia open their campaign against England on June 17, followed by matches against Panama and Ghana.
National team coach Zlatko Dalić remains optimistic.
"I've been talking to Luka and wished him a successful surgery and a quality and speedy recovery. I am convinced he will do everything to be ready for the World Cup."
Modrić remains central to the team. With 196 caps, he is close to reaching the 200-match milestone for his country.
His legacy is already secure. The former Real Madrid and Tottenham midfielder won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 and lifted the Champions League six times.
Despite his age, he continues to play a key role at AC Milan, with 32 starts in Serie A, contributing two goals and three assists this season.
Milan sit third in the table, trailing Inter by 12 points, but the focus now shifts to Modrić’s recovery and race against time.
For Croatia, everything depends on whether their captain returns in time to lead them on the world stage once again.
