The 26-year-old goalkeeper confronted Modrić after Rayo Vallecano’s goal, but the Croatian responded like a true leader.
Real Madrid secured an important 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano in the 27th round of La Liga, moving level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior sealed the win, while Luka Modrić once again proved his value, delivering an assist and earning the Man of the Match award at the age of 39.
Lunin’s outburst in the dressing room
With Thibaut Courtois unavailable, Andriy Lunin unexpectedly started in goal and put in a solid performance. However, he was visibly frustrated after conceding to Pedro Díaz in first-half stoppage time.
Back in the dressing room, the Ukrainian goalkeeper took the rare step of criticizing Modrić and Aurélien Tchouaméni, telling them they needed to close down shots from outside the box more effectively.
"Luka, we have to go out and block those shots from outside!" Lunin reportedly shouted, referring to the goal that disrupted Madrid’s first half.
Modrić’s response: A lesson in leadership
Rather than reacting negatively, Modrić listened attentively and calmly assured Lunin that he would pay more attention to that defensive aspect in future matches. His composed and professional response demonstrated why he remains such a respected figure at Real Madrid.
Modrić’s future at Real Madrid
At 39 years old, Modrić is still a key figure at Real Madrid. His contract expires in June, but speculation is growing that he will extend his stay, with Florentino Pérez reportedly considering offering him a new deal.
The Croatian legend has already played 41 matches this season, scoring four goals and providing six assists. While Pérez rarely grants contract extensions to older players, Modrić’s influence in the dressing room and his mentoring of younger talents make him an exception.
There are also discussions about Modrić potentially remaining at the club beyond his playing career, either as part of the coaching staff or in another senior role within the organization.
A Madridista for life?
Having arrived at Real Madrid in 2012 from Tottenham for €30 million, Modrić has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest midfielders in football history. Now, he could continue his journey at the club in a new role, further solidifying his status as a true Madridista legend.
