Jose Mourinho paid tribute to Diogo Jota at Silverstone, calling the late Liverpool star “a kid who had to fight for everything.” The football world continues to mourn his tragic death.

Jose Mourinho delivered a powerful and emotional tribute to Diogo Jota at the British Grand Prix, following the Liverpool forward’s tragic death in a car crash on Thursday.

Jota, 28, died alongside his younger brother when their Lamborghini suffered a tyre failure in northern Spain and crashed. The vehicle burst into flames, and both brothers lost their lives instantly.

Speaking to Sky Sports at Silverstone, Mourinho praised the late Portugal international’s character and determination, reminding viewers that Jota’s rise to the top came through immense personal struggle.

“When people leave this world, we often say ‘such a nice guy.’ Diogo really was,” Mourinho said. “He had to fight to arrive where he arrived. Nothing was easy for him.”

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager reflected on the tragedy’s devastating impact on Jota’s family: “Three kids without a dad, a young woman without her husband, parents losing both sons… it’s crazy. Maybe one day we’ll understand, but not now.”

Mourinho compared the moment to the death of Rui Filipe, a Porto midfielder who died in a car crash in 1994, while Mourinho was assistant to Bryan Robson. He recalled how the team channelled their grief into unity and strength.

“We suffered together, and we were champions for him. I believe Liverpool will suffer together now,” he added. “At Anfield, he’ll always be part of the family. Maybe they lose a player, but they gain even more soul.”

Reports suggest Liverpool may retire Jota’s number 20 shirt in his honour. His funeral will be held in Gondomar, Portugal, this Saturday, with tributes pouring in from around the football world.

Though Jota’s career was tragically cut short, his legacy of passion, humility, and resilience continues to resonate. As Mourinho said, “He may no longer wear red, but his presence will always be felt at Anfield.”
