Bernardo Silva has become one of the most sought-after free agents in world football, with Real Madrid now reportedly joining Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the battle for his signature.
The Portuguese international recently became available after leaving Manchester City and has yet to decide where he will continue his career.
While Barcelona appeared to be leading the race for several weeks, recent comments from the player have created fresh uncertainty.
Barcelona no longer alone
Silva openly acknowledged that Barcelona remains one of his preferred destinations, but stopped short of confirming any agreement.
"Barcelona is one of the options I have, but I haven't made a decision yet. I will choose a club where I feel truly wanted," Silva said.
According to reports in Spain, those comments surprised Barcelona officials because the club believed a verbal agreement had already been reached regarding a two-year contract.
The midfielder's remarks have reopened the race and encouraged other clubs to intensify their interest.
Mourinho wants him at Real Madrid
According to Portuguese and Spanish reports, newly appointed Real Madrid coach José Mourinho is a long-time admirer of Silva and would welcome the chance to work with him at club level.
Mourinho reportedly views the 31-year-old as a player capable of bringing creativity, experience and leadership to the midfield during a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Although no official negotiations have been confirmed, Silva's name is increasingly appearing in discussions surrounding Real Madrid's transfer plans.
The possibility of working under Mourinho could become an important factor in the player's final decision.
Atletico Madrid also interested
Atletico Madrid have also been linked with the Portuguese playmaker.
Reports suggest Diego Simeone's side considers Silva one of its priority targets as it looks to strengthen the squad for the coming season.
That means three of Spain's biggest clubs could be competing for the same player.
Decision expected after the World Cup
Silva is currently focused on international duty with Portugal and does not appear willing to rush his next move.
Portuguese media reports indicate he intends to postpone a final decision until after the 2026 World Cup.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has publicly backed the possibility of Silva joining Barcelona.
"I have no doubt Bernardo Silva would fit perfectly at Barcelona," Martínez said.
One of the biggest stories of the summer
Few players on the market possess Silva's combination of technical quality, versatility, and winning experience.
After years of success at Manchester City, the midfielder now faces one of the most important decisions of his career.
Barcelona still believes it has the advantage, Atletico Madrid continues to push, and now Mourinho's Real Madrid appears ready to enter the fight.
The final chapter of the Bernardo Silva transfer saga may have to wait until after the World Cup, but interest in the Portuguese star continues to grow.
