The sports world was left in shock after a massive NBA trade saw Luka Doncic move from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis as part of a three-team deal.
The news stunned fans and athletes alike, including several New York City FC players who struggled to comprehend the blockbuster move.
Social media erupted with memes, reaction videos, and disbelief over how such a major trade was pulled off in complete secrecy. Given the MLS and NBA’s close ties, it’s no surprise that NYCFC players were among those reacting.
The crossover between the two leagues is well established. Charlotte FC previously collaborated with the Charlotte Hornets to welcome Wilfried Zaha to MLS, while also unveiling their new home kit with Hornets star Brandon Miller. Additionally, Chicago Fire bosses Gregg Berhalter and Frank Klopas were recently spotted at a Chicago Bulls game, further highlighting the connection between American soccer and basketball.
NYCFC’s 2025 MLS outlook
Despite finishing sixth in the Eastern Conference, NYCFC fell short in the MLS Cup playoffs, getting eliminated in the quarterfinals by rivals New York Red Bulls. However, optimism remains for the upcoming season.
So far, the club has added goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh and defender Prince Amponsah on free transfers. NYCFC will begin their 2025 MLS campaign against Inter Miami on February 23.
