Neiser Villarreal has become the breakout star of the U-20 World Cup after firing Colombia into the semifinals with a hat-trick against Spain, though he’d already signed for Cruzeiro.
The U-20 World Cup in Chile has produced its first true breakout star — Neiser Villarreal. The 20-year-old Colombian midfielder stunned the football world by scoring a brilliant hat-trick in a 3–2 win over Spain, leading Colombia into the semifinals of the tournament.
Villarreal’s total now stands at five goals in Chile, all coming in knockout matches. He scored twice in the round of 16 against South Africa before producing a masterclass performance against one of the tournament favourites. His technical ability, creativity, and composure in front of goal have drawn comparisons to James Rodríguez’s rise at the 2014 World Cup.
However, clubs now taking notice will be disappointed — Villarreal’s future has already been decided. Before the tournament began, he signed a deal with Brazilian side Cruzeiro, joining as a free agent after his contract with Millonarios expired at the end of the year.
European scouts were reportedly following Villarreal last summer, with even Atlético Madrid showing interest, but Cruzeiro moved early and secured his signature. The Brazilian club may now feel they’ve pulled off one of the smartest transfers of the year.
As Colombia prepare for the semifinals, Villarreal’s performances continue to capture the imagination of fans back home — a young star already on his way to becoming one of South America’s most exciting prospects.
