Slovenian forward Nejc Gradišar provided an assist in his first Cairo derby as Al Ahly drew 1-1 with Zamalek in the Egyptian Premier League.
Nejc Gradišar marked his debut in the iconic Cairo derby by playing a key role in Al Ahly’s opening goal against Zamalek. Widely regarded as the biggest football rivalry in Egypt—and arguably all of Africa—the showdown between these two clubs, both recognized by CAF as the best African teams of the 20th century, ended in a 1-1 draw.
Gradišar, who joined Al Ahly earlier this year, delivered a pinpoint cross from the right flank, setting up Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki to score on his debut. Bencharki, who arrived from Qatar at the end of January, is seen as a major signing for Al Ahly, alongside Gradišar, as the club strengthens its squad in preparation for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Despite Al Ahly’s lead, Zamalek equalized six minutes before the final whistle, securing a draw that ultimately benefits league leaders Pyramids FC, who now have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Egyptian Premier League.
Gradišar’s impressive performance in such a high-stakes match has quickly endeared him to Al Ahly’s passionate fanbase, and his partnership with Bencharki promises to be a key asset as the club pushes for domestic and international success.
