Lyon’s Nemanja Matic has been suspended for two matches after taping over an anti-homophobia message during a Ligue 1 match, part of the league's annual awareness campaign.
Nemanja Matic, midfielder for Lyon, has been given a two-match ban by Ligue 1 after covering an anti-homophobia symbol on his shirt with tape during a league match.
The incident occurred on 17 May, when Lyon defeated Angers 2-0. As part of Ligue 1’s ongoing anti-homophobia awareness campaign, now in its fifth year, players are encouraged to wear rainbow-coloured logos or messages on their kits. Matic, however, concealed the sleeve design with tape, as did Le Havre striker Ahmed Hassan, who also received an identical suspension.
The pair were both issued two-match suspensions, with an additional two-match ban suspended. The French league's disciplinary body stated that the action violated the league’s campaign rules, aimed at promoting inclusion and raising awareness of discrimination in football.
Matic, 36, has yet to renew his contract with Lyon, which expires at the end of June. The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder has not publicly commented on the incident.
The Ligue 1 campaign, while widely supported, has sparked controversy in recent years. Some players have declined to participate, citing religious or personal beliefs. Mostafa Mohamed of Nantes missed a crucial match against Montpellier, posting on Instagram: "I believe in mutual respect—the respect we owe others but also the respect we owe to ourselves and our beliefs."
In 2023, Monaco’s Mohamed Camara received a four-match ban for a similar action. Meanwhile, a group of Toulouse players chose not to participate in a match, with the club supporting their decision based on "disagreement with the association of their image with rainbow colours".
The debate around these initiatives continues to challenge clubs, players, and governing bodies, as they navigate the balance between inclusivity campaigns and individual expression.
