Borussia Dortmund have reportedly made their first move for 17-year-old Gilberto Mora after the Mexican midfielder emerged as one of the biggest young stars of the World Cup.

Gilberto Mora left the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the tournament's biggest teenage revelations, and his performances have already attracted the attention of some of Europe's leading clubs. According to reports from Germany, Borussia Dortmund are among the first to seriously explore a move for the highly rated Mexican midfielder.
The latest information comes from Lothar Matthäus, the legendary former Germany captain, who revealed in his column for Bild that Dortmund have already made initial enquiries about the 17-year-old.
"Mora, a 17-year-old Mexican, played four matches at this World Cup. Despite his age, he is an exceptional talent who is already attracting the attention of many European clubs. I have also heard that Borussia Dortmund have already made the first enquiries," Matthäus wrote.
Dortmund have built a worldwide reputation for identifying and developing elite young talent. The Bundesliga club helped launch the careers of Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembélé, Jadon Sancho and, years earlier, Robert Lewandowski, turning promising youngsters into global superstars.
Club officials reportedly believe Mora possesses many of the qualities required to follow a similar path. Calm in possession, technically gifted and mature beyond his years, the Mexican impressed throughout the World Cup despite being one of the youngest players at the tournament.
Mora is currently under contract with Club Tijuana until 2029, having signed a new long-term deal shortly before the World Cup. That agreement has significantly strengthened the Mexican club's negotiating position.
Although Transfermarkt currently values the midfielder at around €10 million, reports in Mexico suggest Tijuana would demand close to €20 million before considering any offers for one of the country's brightest young talents.
At this stage, no official negotiations have begun, but interest has increased dramatically since the World Cup. Several European clubs are believed to be monitoring the teenager, with Dortmund currently regarded as one of the strongest contenders.
Matthäus also believes a move to Germany would have benefits beyond football. In his view, Mora's arrival in the Bundesliga would increase the league's popularity in Mexico, where Dortmund already enjoy a large following thanks to their tradition of developing young stars.
If Borussia Dortmund complete the deal, Gilberto Mora could become the latest wonderkid to use the German club as a launching pad towards football's very highest level.
