David Zec has been called up to the Slovenian national team for the first time in his career.

When he announced the roster for the upcoming qualifying matches against Finland and Northern Ireland, coach Matjaž Kek admitted that some players were struggling with injuries. For instance, defenders David Brekalo and Vanja Drkušić are dealing with fitness issues, prompting Kek to seek an additional solution.

Today, he called up a new defender to the national team, namely David Zec, who plays for Celje. Zec, 23 years old, has been playing for Celje since July 2021. In 2018, he moved from Triglav to Benfica, and subsequently played for Rukh in Ukraine.

He has represented all the younger selections of the Slovenian national team. Now, he will make his debut in the senior national team.

In addition to Zec, Matjaž Kek also called up Miha Zajc to the national team. The Fenerbahçe player also had injury issues, which is why he was not on the initial list. Apparently, he has recovered, as he played for Fenerbahçe in the Conference League yesterday.
