Arsenal have lost one of the brightest talents from their academy after Kyran Thompson completed his move to Newcastle United.

The highly rated 16-year-old winger rejected a new scholarship offer from the Gunners before deciding to continue his development on Tyneside.

After confirming his departure, Thompson shared a short but emotional message on social media.

"Thank you for everything, Arsenal."

The five-word farewell accompanied an image marking the end of his two-year spell at the Emirates.

One of Arsenal's standout academy prospects

Thompson joined Arsenal from West Ham United two years ago and quickly established himself as one of the club's most exciting young attackers.

His performances earned regular appearances for Arsenal's Under-18 side, while he also impressed enough to make his Under-21 debut in a draw against Southampton last November.

The teenager even trained with Mikel Arteta's first-team squad, highlighting how highly he was regarded inside the club.

Arsenal were keen to keep Thompson and reportedly pushed hard for him to sign scholarship terms, especially after Tottenham Hotspur also expressed interest.

Instead, Newcastle won the race for one of England's most promising academy players.

Newcastle project proves decisive

Despite uncertainty surrounding the club following the departure of manager Eddie Howe, Newcastle convinced Thompson that St James' Park offered the best pathway for his future.

The youngster is now expected to begin his development with Newcastle's academy before attempting to force his way into the senior setup.

Incoming head coach Matthias Jaissle is also expected to assess the winger during the coming months.

Another Arsenal-Newcastle connection

Ironically, while Thompson heads north, Arsenal continue working on a move in the opposite direction.

The London club remain interested in signing Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, with reports suggesting the Brazilian is open to a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal are believed to be preparing an offer worth more than £75 million for the midfielder, who contributed nine goals and eight assists in 41 appearances last season before representing Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For now, however, Newcastle supporters will be celebrating the arrival of one of Arsenal's most highly regarded academy graduates.
