Neymar’s return to Europe looks uncertain as Santos pushes to extend his contract beyond 2025. The Brazilian forward faces injury setbacks and national team doubts, making his future unclear.
Neymar’s return to Santos after 12 years away was initially seen as a stepping stone toward a comeback in Europe, with Barcelona among the clubs linked to his name. The Brazilian forward signed a short-term contract until January 30, 2025, hoping to secure a move back to European football for the following season. However, Santos president Marcelo Teixeira now claims the club is very optimistic about keeping Neymar until the 2026 World Cup.
A new setback for Neymar
Despite initial progress in recovering form and fitness, Neymar’s season has once again been overshadowed by controversy. His muscular issues and public appearance at Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival have raised questions about his commitment and long-term ambitions.
The latest setback came at a crucial moment for Santos and Neymar’s potential career revival. He was forced to watch from the bench as his team lost the Paulistão semifinal to Corinthians, further delaying his return to top-level football.
For European clubs, Neymar’s situation presents risks that may deter potential suitors. His injury record, off-field distractions, and advancing age make any move back to Europe increasingly uncertain.
Santos confident about keeping Neymar
Santos president Marcelo Teixeira remains upbeat about Neymar’s impact at the club, both on and off the pitch.
"The first few months have been very positive. We designed an important project for Neymar's adaptation and growth, both inside and outside the pitch. On the field, we want him to develop technically, and he has been doing that. Off the field, we are seeing results in terms of sponsorships, corporate partnerships, and increased revenue," Teixeira stated.
