Niclas Füllkrug has joined AC Milan on loan from West Ham, hoping to revive his scoring form after a difficult Premier League spell and boost his chances of making Germany’s World Cup squad this summer.
Niclas Füllkrug is looking for a fresh start in Italy. The German striker has left West Ham and joined AC Milan on loan, hoping to rediscover the form that made him one of the most reliable scorers in the Bundesliga.
His time in England was a clear disappointment. This season, Füllkrug failed to score in 11 appearances for West Ham and leaves the club with a modest total of three goals in 29 matches.
Now, with the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico approaching this summer, the experienced striker knows that he must start scoring again if he wants to secure his place in the German national team.
“I had three or four great years at Werder, Borussia Dortmund and with the national team, playing regularly, scoring and providing assists,” Füllkrug told Italian journalists.
“The goal is to get back to that level. Above all, I want to be available regularly and contribute with goals and assists.”
The 31-year-old also explained why his move to England never really worked out.
“It wasn’t easy at West Ham. I came after a very long season, playing 57 games, and I didn’t have a full preparation because of the European Championship,” he said.
“I arrived in London without the chance to prepare myself physically well enough. I didn’t do well in England, so I want to turn over a new leaf. I feel great and I’m ready to play.”
At AC Milan, he will be expected to add experience and goals to a team that is currently second in Serie A after 20 rounds and firmly in the title race.
Milan’s next match comes today against Fiorentina, who are currently 18th in the table, and Füllkrug could already get his first chance to show that his Italian chapter will be very different from the English one.
For the German striker, the mission is clear: score again, rebuild confidence, and prove that his best years are not behind him.
