Nico Williams has delivered a stunning blow to Barcelona by rejecting their advances and signing a new contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2035.
Just days ago, reports suggested that the 21-year-old Spanish winger was edging closer to joining the reigning La Liga champions. But on Wednesday, Athletic released a video announcement confirming Williams’ decision to stay with the club where he has grown into a star.
Williams is now set to become the highest-paid player in Athletic's history, with the Basque club reportedly matching the financial offer made by Barcelona. His new contract includes a release clause of €90 million, significantly higher than the previous €58 million.
"When making important decisions, the most important thing for me is what my heart says. I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home. Aupa Athletic!" Williams said in the emotional video message.
He has made 167 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals, and recently impressed for Spain at Euro 2024. His loyalty is being hailed as a major win for Athletic’s philosophy of nurturing and retaining homegrown talent.
