Julian Alvarez will remain an Atletico Madrid player beyond the transfer deadline. After days of uncertainty surrounding his future, the Argentine striker has accepted that he will not be leaving the club this summer.
Alvarez had been pushing for a move to Barcelona, with the uncertainty surrounding his future even leading to him taking sick leave several days ago as speculation intensified.
Atletico, however, never changed their position. The Madrid club resisted the player's desire to leave and the attempts to facilitate his transfer, making it clear that they had no intention of allowing one of their biggest stars to join Barcelona.
Barcelona move is now over
The situation has now effectively been resolved. Barcelona have moved in another direction by bringing in Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, leaving Alvarez without the transfer he wanted.
Arsenal had also been heavily linked with the Argentine during the summer, but that option never seriously appealed to him. Alvarez has no desire to return to England after previously playing for Manchester City and wants to continue his career in La Liga.
That means there should be no dramatic late twist before the transfer window closes. Alvarez has accepted Atletico's decision and is now expected to return his full attention to football.
His comeback could arrive as early as this weekend, when Atletico face Athletic Bilbao in La Liga. After one of the summer's longest-running transfer sagas, Alvarez is staying in Madrid – whether that was his preferred outcome or not.
