Scunthorpe United defender Jonathan Gjoshe is recovering in hospital after being slashed during a shocking stabbing attack on an LNER train. A 32-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder.
Scunthorpe United player Jonathan Gjoshe has been identified as one of the victims of a horrific knife attack that took place onboard a high-speed LNER train travelling from Doncaster to London. The 22-year-old defender sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital as he continues his recovery.
The attack occurred on Saturday evening, leaving 11 people requiring hospital treatment. Police have charged 32-year-old Anthony Williams with 10 counts of attempted murder, while investigations continue. One LNER staff member remains in a critical but stable condition.
In an official statement, Scunthorpe United said: “Jonathan sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack but currently remains in hospital. Everyone at the club sends our heartfelt well wishes to Jonathan for a full recovery, which is also extended to all the victims onboard the train.”
Another victim has been named as 61-year-old Nottingham Forest supporter Stephen Crean, who suffered multiple stab wounds after attempting to intervene. “My motive was to protect people,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “I was scared, but you just go with it.”
Scunthorpe manager Andy Butler confirmed the player has already undergone surgery. “The club stands by him,” he said. “We just want to wish him all the best. It’s an awful thing to happen. It hits close to home.”
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis also released a message of support: “The courage and selflessness shown by supporters on that train represents the very best of humanity. We will ensure they receive whatever support they need.”
Gjoshe, who joined Scunthorpe earlier this season, has yet to make his competitive debut for the club. He was last named on the bench in September and will now face a period of recovery before returning to football.
