Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas has confirmed interest from Club América but says his priority is securing a move to Europe as he plans the next step of his career.
Obed Vargas has confirmed that Club América expressed interest in signing him during the winter transfer window, but the Seattle Sounders midfielder made it clear that his priority is a future move to Europe.
Speaking to ESPN, the 20-year-old revealed that América contacted his representatives, but he quickly ruled out a switch to Liga MX.
“They got in touch, but my priority is to go to Europe,” Vargas said.
“My contract with the Sounders expires at the end of this year, so if it doesn’t happen before then, the idea is for it to happen at the end of the year.”
A key figure in Seattle
Vargas made his professional debut with Seattle in 2021 and has since become a core part of the team under head coach Brian Schmetzer. Across five MLS seasons, he has recorded four goals and 12 assists in 92 league appearances.
His influence has extended beyond domestic competition. Vargas was part of the Sounders side that won the CONCACAF Champions League in 2022 and later lifted the Leagues Cup in 2025, when Seattle defeated Inter Miami in the final.
Growing international profile
Strong club performances have also accelerated Vargas’ rise at international level. He has earned call-ups across Mexico’s youth ranks and into the senior Mexico national football team.
Most recently, he featured under head coach Javier Aguirre, coming on in the 65th minute of a friendly against Uruguay national football team to replace Marcel Ruiz.
Vargas also represented Mexico at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, playing all five matches as the team reached the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina national football team.
Eyes on the 2026 World Cup
Looking ahead, Vargas has made it clear that his long-term ambition is to secure a place in Mexico’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.
“The November camp was very good for me. I had a strong camp and my name became more known,” he said.
“Every time I’m called up, it’s a positive thing. This time I played 30 minutes, so the next step is to play at least 45 minutes to really establish myself.”
He added that the message from the coaching staff has been consistent.
“They make it clear that if you’re there, it’s because you have a chance. There are only a limited number of spots, so the key is to stay healthy, fit and playing. Those are my goals for this year.”
Season opener approaching
Vargas and Seattle Sounders will open their 2026 MLS campaign on February 22, hosting Colorado Rapids at Lumen Field, as the young midfielder continues to build momentum ahead of a potential European move.
