Atlético Madrid have completed the €40 million signing of Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand, beating competition from Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Atletico Madrid have officially completed the signing of Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP, securing one of Europe's most sought-after midfielders in a deal worth €40 million.
The 27-year-old Denmark international has signed a contract running until June 2031, becoming Diego Simeone's latest addition ahead of the new season.
Atletico move quickly
Hjulmand attracted strong interest throughout the summer and was regularly linked with Real Madrid and AC Milan.
However, Atletico acted decisively to complete the transfer and secure the Sporting captain before any of their rivals could make a final move.
Agent dispute changes Atletico's plans
Spanish reports claim Atletico changed their transfer strategy after becoming frustrated during negotiations involving super-agent Jorge Mendes.
The Madrid club had been working on potential deals involving Bernardo Silva and João Gomes, both represented by Mendes.
After Bernardo Silva opted to join Real Madrid, Atlético reportedly ended their pursuit of João Gomes and turned their full attention to Hjulmand.
A proven leader
Hjulmand arrives in Spain after captaining Sporting to two Portuguese league titles.
Before moving to Lisbon, he built his reputation with Lecce in Italy, while earlier spells with Admira Wacker in Austria and Copenhagen in Denmark helped launch his professional career.
He has also become a regular member of the Danish national team.
Known for his tactical discipline, physical presence and defensive awareness, Hjulmand fits the profile of midfielder long favoured by Simeone.
Second summer signing
Hjulmand becomes Atletico Madrid's second major signing of the transfer window following the arrival of Alejandro Grimaldo.
The Spanish club continues to strengthen its squad as Simeone looks to build a team capable of challenging for domestic and European honours in the 2026/27 campaign.
