Olimpija's coach Victor Sanchez speaks about the team's ambitions and game plan ahead of their UEFA Conference League clash against Bundesliga's Heidenheim.
Olimpija Ljubljana is set to face Heidenheim in their UEFA Conference League opener, marking their seventh European match of the season. As Olimpija remains unbeaten in the current campaign, coach Victor Sanchez expressed optimism and outlined the team's ambitions at the pre-match press conference.
"Our journey to Europe was not easy," Sanchez remarked. "We put in a lot of effort, and this is a reward for the team. But we will enjoy it the most by making the most of these six new opportunities to achieve good results. We're here to compete."
Facing Heidenheim, a team currently impressing in the Bundesliga, Sanchez acknowledged the challenge ahead. "We're up against a tough opponent, playing in one of the best leagues in the world. And not only do they play, but they stand out in this competition," he said, noting Heidenheim's physicality and balance between attack and defense.
Sanchez provided insight into the tactical approach his team will take: "We want to be dominant in possession, but we know the quality of the opponent. We probably won't have as much of the ball as we do in our home games. The plan is to create opportunities when we have possession and defend well when we don’t. In football, it's not about the statistics; we need to take advantage of what comes our way."
Olimpija’s ability to hold their own against a Bundesliga side will be closely watched as they embark on their Conference League journey, determined to make the most of their European adventure.
