Diogo Jota and Andre Silva were laid to rest in Gondomar, with Liverpool teammates and football stars emotionally joining the farewell ceremony. Van Dijk and Robertson led the grieving delegation.
Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva were laid to rest today in Gondomar, surrounded by grieving family, teammates, and football dignitaries. The tragic farewell drew an emotional crowd that included many of football’s biggest names.
The funeral ceremony began with a mass and was attended by parents, wives, children, close friends, and a long line of mourners who came to honor the brothers' memory. The scene was one of deep sadness, as the young lives of two beloved athletes were remembered.
Liverpool players and staff, including head coach Arne Slot, arrived in Gondomar the day before to pay their respects. Among them were visibly shaken Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson, who led the delegation. They struggled to hold back tears while meeting the players' families.
The two defenders carried a floral tribute shaped like football jerseys, displaying the numbers 20 and 30—the shirt numbers of Jota and Silva, respectively. It was a poignant symbol of remembrance from their Liverpool family.
Numerous football figures joined the procession, including Bruno Fernandes, Danilo, Joao Cancelo, former Portugal coach Fernando Santos, national team manager Roberto Martinez, league president Pedro Proenca, and many others.
The massive turnout and the emotional atmosphere confirmed how deeply the football world—and Portugal—felt the loss of two young men taken far too soon.
