PSG have opened contract talks with Ousmane Dembélé, but negotiations have stalled over huge salary demands, with Liverpool and Saudi clubs monitoring the situation closely.
Paris Saint-Germain have opened talks over a new contract with Ousmane Dembélé, but the first round of negotiations has reportedly gone badly.
According to Foot Mercato, the French international has already rejected PSG’s initial offer, despite being under contract until 2028.
After a highly successful season in which PSG reached historic milestones, the club wanted to secure the future of the 28-year-old winger as quickly as possible. Instead, they have run into a major problem: money.
Sources close to the negotiations claim PSG are ready to offer around €30 million per year. However, Dembélé’s camp is reportedly asking for close to €60 million per season, a figure that would break PSG’s current wage structure under their new, more cautious financial policy.
Dembélé was a crucial part of Luis Enrique’s system last season. His pace, dribbling and attacking impact were among the key reasons behind PSG’s domestic and European success.
The club are fully aware that losing him would be a major sporting blow, but the size of his demands has already caused serious hesitation inside the club.
The situation has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. In France, it is reported that Saudi clubs and Premier League giants are closely monitoring the talks, knowing they can easily match or exceed Dembélé’s financial expectations.
PSG are now facing a difficult decision: break their new salary limits to keep their star, or risk opening the door to one of the biggest transfer sagas of the coming seasons.
Friction with Luis Enrique?
French media have long spoken about alleged tensions between Dembélé and Luis Enrique, something PSG have publicly denied. However, several major outlets insist the relationship is far from ideal.
Dembélé is reportedly unhappy with how carefully the coach is managing his return after injury. He believes he is ready for more responsibility and more minutes, while Enrique remains extremely cautious.
This has reflected in his playing time this season: just 16 appearances so far, only nine of them in Ligue 1.
Is Liverpool the real reason?
There are few clubs in Europe that can compete with PSG financially, and a move to Saudi Arabia at the peak of his career seems unlikely.
In France, many believe the real reason for Dembélé’s hesitation is England. Liverpool are said to be seriously interested and could be looking for a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah after the end of the season.
