French football faces financial crisis as Ligue 1 clubs prepare for dramatically reduced TV income despite PSG reaching the Champions League final.disciplinary fines.
Paris Saint-Germain may be preparing for a Champions League final, but the financial reality inside French football looks increasingly alarming.
New reports reveal that the Ligue 1 champion will receive only around €11.7 million from domestic television rights during the 2026/27 season.
Even more shocking, the club finishing last in the French top division is expected to earn only €3.6 million.
The numbers are dramatically lower than in other major European leagues.
For comparison, even the lowest-paid club in the Spanish second division reportedly receives around €5.3 million from television revenue.
French football has entered a serious financial crisis following the collapse of several major broadcasting agreements.
As a result, the league launched its own streaming platform called Ligue 1+, which now carries most league matches directly to subscribers.
According to current estimates, the platform has reached approximately 1.1 million subscribers, while league officials hope to grow that number to 1.5 million next season.
Another major blow arrived with the expected departure of beIN Sports.
The broadcaster had reportedly paid around €80 million annually for one marquee Ligue 1 match each week, while also contributing another €20 million through sponsorship agreements.
Without that support, concerns inside French football continue to rise.
The situation becomes even more complicated because television income distribution remains heavily unbalanced.
Clubs competing in European tournaments receive the largest share of international broadcasting revenue, leaving lower-ranked sides fighting over a much smaller financial pool.
According to current projections, clubs finishing from fifth place downward are expected to receive an average of only around €8.6 million.
The crisis has increased fears that many French clubs could struggle financially in the coming years despite the international success of teams like PSG.
