Khvicha Kvaratskhelia leads the Champions League with elite numbers, yet his Ballon d’Or hopes face challenges due to domestic form and lack of World Cup exposure.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia delivered another elite performance on the biggest stage.
In the Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich clash, the Georgian winger stood out among top names like Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz, and Harry Kane. While others impressed, Kvaratskhelia drove the game with direct impact.
He scored two goals, taking his Champions League tally this season to 10 goals and 5 assists. No other player in the competition matches that output.
Those numbers place him in rare company. In the last 20 years, only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roberto Firmino, Robert Lewandowski, and Raphinha have reached the same mark in a single campaign.
He also set a new PSG benchmark, surpassing last season’s output from Dembélé.
The impact goes beyond goals. Kvaratskhelia shifts positions, breaks defensive structure, and creates overloads. He operates as a winger, midfielder, and forward within the same phase of play.
Despite this, the Ballon d’Or race remains uncertain.
His domestic numbers in Ligue 1 stand at seven goals and four assists, which fall short compared to rivals like Dembélé, Kane, Kylian Mbappé, and Lamine Yamal.
Another factor weighs heavily. Georgia will not feature at the upcoming World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Performances on that stage often decide the award.
Without that platform, his chances depend on club success. A Champions League title could shift the balance, but nothing is guaranteed.
Legend Clarence Seedorf gave his view.
"Kvaratskhelia is the best player in the world right now. He understands every situation. He controls the game and still decides matches in attack," he said.
The recognition is clear. The question is whether it will translate into the biggest individual prize in football.
