Willian Pacho cemented his place among Europe's elite defenders with an exceptional performance in Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League round-of-16 victory against Liverpool at Anfield.
The 23-year-old Ecuadorian defender played a decisive role, dominating physically and tactically throughout the high-stakes match. His standout statistics—seven clearances and five interceptions—highlight his crucial impact in PSG’s progression to the quarter-finals.
PSG's sporting director, Luis Campos, faced criticism initially for signing Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt. However, after just six months, this decision has proven to be one of his best acquisitions.
Coach Luis Enrique places enormous trust in Pacho, who now leads PSG in minutes played this season. His partnership with club captain Marquinhos finally seems to provide the defensive stability previously lacking, after disappointing stints from stars like Sergio Ramos and injury-hit defenders such as Presnel Kimpembe and Milan Škriniar.
Pacho’s style closely resembles Antonio Rudiger: physically imposing, aggressive, and consistently reliable in high-pressure situations. His emergence resolves a long-standing defensive issue at PSG, significantly increasing their chances in European competitions.
His rapid progression from Ecuadorian champions Independiente del Valle to PSG through Antwerp and Frankfurt reflects Ecuador's increasing prominence. Alongside talents like Piero Hincapie, Moises Caicedo, and future Chelsea player Kendry Paez, Pacho is part of Ecuador's strongest-ever football generation.
With this performance, Willian Pacho officially joined the elite group of Europe’s top defenders, alongside renowned names such as Virgil van Dijk, Marquinhos, and Rudiger.
