The final hours of the transfer window produced one of its most emotional scenes as Pablo Garcia said goodbye to Real Betis before completing his move to Racing Santander.
The 20-year-old was filmed leaving Betis' training facilities after collecting his belongings from the dressing room. His mother was driving the car and Garcia was visibly overwhelmed by emotion, unable to speak to the journalists waiting outside.
Betis supporters surrounded the car to say goodbye to the youngster, creating powerful scenes as Garcia and members of his family struggled to hold back their tears.
His father broke down while explaining the decision
Garcia's father, Ramon, later spoke to Spanish radio programme El Partidazo de COPE and admitted the entire family had found the sudden departure extremely difficult. According to him, the transfer emerged unexpectedly during the afternoon before negotiations continued deep into the evening.
"You saw the boy and his mother... He went to get his things in the locker, and we are all going through this very hard," Ramon said through tears. "However, as soon as he starts training, he will give his all, and I am sure he will make the Racing fans happy."
The main reason behind Garcia's decision was simple: he needs regular football. With fierce competition for places at Betis, the youngster and his family concluded that another season spent waiting for opportunities from the bench could slow his development.
"At his age, the most important thing is to play. Betis has a great team and many top players. We were faced with a dilemma – to stay and wait for crumbs from the bench or to go somewhere where he can play, revive his career and enjoy football again. We chose the latter," his father explained.
Garcia will now continue his career with Racing Santander, where he hopes regular minutes will provide the platform to demonstrate the talent that made him such a highly regarded prospect at Betis.
For now, however, football has taken a back seat. The images of Garcia leaving the club alongside his mother showed just how difficult it can be for a young player to walk away from the place he considers home.
