Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane backs Cole Palmer despite injury struggles, insisting the England international remains one of the best players in the world.

Cole Palmer continues to receive strong backing from Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane, despite a difficult period marked by injury.

The 23-year-old has struggled with a recurring groin problem, his first major setback at the senior level, which has affected his consistency this season.

McFarlane rejects criticism

Speaking at a press conference, McFarlane dismissed claims that Palmer’s performances have declined.

“It’s been a difficult period for him. He’s dealing with his first real injury and learning how to manage it. I don’t agree with the idea that he’s not playing well,” he said.

“There are games where he can have more impact, but he has created many good chances. He cannot control whether they are finished.”

Confidence remains high

McFarlane insisted that Palmer’s quality is still clear and that consistency will return.

“He has had some strong performances in recent months. It’s about building rhythm again. For me, he is still a top player, one of the best in the world,” he added.

The coach, who will lead Chelsea for the final matches of the season, believes Palmer will be ready for key moments.

“I have no concerns about him. He will be ready to impact games and hopefully perform for England at the World Cup,” McFarlane said.

Focus on strong finish

Palmer is also aiming to secure a place in the England squad under Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming World Cup.

At club level, Chelsea is building momentum after a 1-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final.

The team sits ninth in the Premier League but still has targets ahead, including a cup final against Manchester City and a push for European places.

McFarlane praised the squad’s attitude following the departure of Liam Rosenior.

“The players are committed and open to work. We focus on the next games, Nottingham Forest, then Liverpool, and aim to win as many as possible,” he said.

For Palmer, the next weeks will be crucial in regaining full form and proving his value on both club and international level.
