Barcelona wants injured defender Pau Cubarsí to return for treatment, but the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) refuses to release him, believing he could still play Sunday.
Tensions have surfaced between FC Barcelona and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after Pau Cubarsí suffered an injury during Spain’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in a recent youth international match.
The teenage centre-back was forced off the pitch and replaced by Dean Huijsen, prompting immediate concern from his club. Barcelona reportedly requested the player’s release to assess and manage the injury, fearing a possible aggravation if he remains with the national setup.
However, according to AS, the RFEF has denied the request, suggesting that Cubarsí might recover in time to feature in the return leg on Sunday. The federation reportedly sees value in retaining him for the upcoming fixture, despite his current physical concerns.
Barça worried about player’s long-term fitness
Barcelona are reluctant to take risks with the young defender, who has emerged as a key figure in their backline this season. The club fears that continuing with the national team may jeopardize his recovery and add further strain at a critical stage of the season.
Despite the standoff, recent reports suggest that Spain coach Luis de la Fuente may call up an additional defender to reinforce the squad, hinting that Cubarsí’s availability remains uncertain.
With Spain’s depth in defence, including several more experienced options, the Catalan club believes the safer option is to bring their player home—but for now, that decision rests with the federation.
