Stefan Bajčetić returns to full training at Liverpool, and new Serbia coach Veljko Paunović is preparing to invite the 21-year-old midfielder to join the national team.
Stefan Bajčetić is back in first-team training at Liverpool after a long spell on the sidelines, opening the door for a potential place in Veljko Paunović’s Serbia squad.
The 21-year-old midfielder has struggled with recurring hamstring issues, spending more than six months out during his latest setback. This has been the third significant injury pause of his young professional career.
After completing rehabilitation, Bajčetić has rejoined Liverpool’s first team and is gradually returning to full fitness. Manager Arne Slot is dealing with a challenging season, with Liverpool failing to meet expectations in several key matches. Bajčetić could become a valuable option to refresh the midfield, especially as supporters continue to call for his return.
“We need someone like Stefan Bajčetić. Give the boy minutes,” wrote one fan on social media, while another added: “Bajčetić is the solution in midfield. He would offer more than Gravenberch.”
Liverpool, however, are unlikely to rush his comeback. The plan is for the midfielder to spend a month or two with the U23 side to rebuild match fitness before Slot decides on his next steps. January is expected to bring clarity on whether Bajčetić will stay at the club or go out on another loan spell.
Bajčetić made his breakthrough under Jürgen Klopp, appearing in 22 matches before temporary spells at Salzburg and Las Palmas.
National team future
Born in Spain and formerly part of Spain’s youth system, Bajčetić now appears closer than ever to choosing Serbia at senior level. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente had considered giving him an opportunity before his latest injury intervened.
Serbia, meanwhile, have intensified their efforts. New national team coach Veljko Paunović maintains excellent relations with the Bajčetić family and is ready to extend a formal invitation as soon as the player returns to competitive rhythm.
The coming months will provide clarity, but early indications suggest Bajčetić is leaning toward representing Serbia. If confirmed, the gifted midfielder would represent a major boost for the national team.
