Pep Guardiola believes new signing Rayan Cherki could become a future Manchester City star, calling him one of the most gifted players he has ever coached despite his recent injury setback.

Pep Guardiola has once again highlighted his sharp eye for talent, singling out Rayan Cherki as one of the most exceptional players he has ever managed. The Manchester City boss praised the young Frenchman’s technical brilliance ahead of the club’s Champions League clash with Villarreal.
The 21-year-old joined City from Lyon last summer in a deal worth around €36 million, arriving as a long-term successor to Kevin De Bruyne. Cherki made a strong impression in his first few matches before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the past 12 games across all competitions.
Guardiola confirmed that Cherki will not be ready to return against Villarreal but was quick to praise his incredible potential during the pre-match press conference.
“Rayan Cherki is one of the most talented players I have seen in my career,” Guardiola said. “Technically, he is top-notch. The only question with him is how he adapts and reads the game. The situation on the pitch improves every time he receives the ball. Now he no longer feels the pressure he felt when he first arrived.”
Before his injury, Cherki had made seven appearances for Manchester City — three in the Premier League and four in the Club World Cup — showing glimpses of the creativity and flair that made him one of France’s most exciting young talents.
With Guardiola’s track record of developing young stars such as Phil Foden, Pedri (at Barcelona), and Jamal Musiala (during his Bayern tenure), many expect Cherki to flourish once he returns to full fitness. His vision, close control, and ability to unlock defenses could make him a vital piece in City’s next generation of champions.
