Pep Guardiola has called on Phil Foden to dedicate his career to Manchester City, following Erling Haaland’s historic contract extension that ties him to the club until 2034.
Foden, whose current deal runs until 2027, is seen as a cornerstone of City’s future by his manager.
After a challenging start to the season, the 24-year-old is regaining his form, evidenced by his two goals and an assist in City's 6-0 victory over Ipswich on Sunday. With five goals in his last three Premier League games, Foden is back to showcasing the qualities that earned him the title of Premier League Player of the Season last year.
Guardiola’s Vision for Foden
Guardiola praised Foden’s unique ability and expressed hope that the midfielder will resist future interest from rival clubs. "He should not leave," Guardiola said. "He can be a one-club man and finish his career here. At his age, with the amount of goals, assists, and his work ethic, he’s special."
The City boss highlighted Foden’s natural instincts as a goalscorer, saying: "Around the box, he has goals in his blood, his bones, in his mind. He thinks, 'I'm going to score.' That’s why I want to put him in central positions."
Guardiola acknowledged the personal challenges Foden faced earlier this season, stating: "He was a completely different boy at the beginning of the season with a few problems. But he’s happy again, enjoying playing, and that’s really good for all of us."
A Bright Future
Foden, who signed a contract extension two years ago, has grown from an academy graduate to one of the Premier League’s top talents under Guardiola’s guidance. He has been pivotal to City’s domestic and European successes and England’s strong performances in major tournaments.
City, currently fourth in the Premier League, are eager to extend Foden’s stay, as part of a broader effort to secure the futures of their top stars. Haaland’s recent contract extension underscores the club’s commitment to building a dynasty, and Guardiola sees Foden as a key part of that vision.
Guardiola's Final Plea
Guardiola ended his appeal with a glowing endorsement of Foden’s potential: "He has the ability to play many, many years here. He has so much to give, and we want him to be part of this club’s future."
