Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, tried to console Luka Modric after the team’s shocking 2-5 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
As Modric collected the runner-up trophy, Perez told him, "We have to lose a final sometime, don’t we?"
Real Madrid endured a difficult match, with Barcelona outclassing them despite Real taking an early lead. The sending off of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny in the 57th minute left Madrid at a disadvantage, and Barca capitalized by scoring four goals before half-time.
The conversation between Perez and Modric was captured by Movistar cameras during the awards ceremony. Modric, who was the last player to ascend the stage, received a supportive gesture from Perez, a rare moment for a club that is used to winning finals.
The match wasn’t without controversy, as referee Gil Manzano had to review two key moments using VAR—first, a penalty awarded for a foul on Camavinga and later, the red card for Szczesny. Despite these moments, Barcelona’s strong attacking display ensured their comfortable victory and their first trophy of the season.
