Portugal are set for a change on the bench following their disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup, with reports in Portugal claiming that Roberto Martínez is preparing to leave his position as national team coach.
According to A Bola, the Portuguese Football Federation has already identified its preferred successor, with experienced coach Jorge Jesus emerging as the leading candidate.
Martínez's three-year spell is expected to end after Portugal's Round of 16 defeat to Spain, a result that brought an early end to the team's World Cup campaign and marked Cristiano Ronaldo's final appearance at football's biggest tournament.
For Jorge Jesus, the appointment would represent the biggest achievement of a coaching career that has spanned almost four decades.
The 71-year-old has managed some of Portugal's biggest clubs, enjoyed successful spells in Brazil and Saudi Arabia, and built a reputation as one of the country's most respected coaches. However, he has never had the opportunity to lead the Portuguese national team, a role long considered one of his biggest ambitions.
Jesus is currently without a club after leaving Al Nassr, where he coached Ronaldo during the most recent Saudi Pro League season.
If appointed, Jesus would immediately begin preparations for Euro 2028 before leading Portugal into the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a tournament the country will co-host alongside Spain and Morocco.
The Portuguese Football Federation has yet to officially confirm Martínez's departure or announce a replacement, but Portuguese media believe the coaching transition is expected to happen quickly as preparations for the next international cycle begin.
