Ruben Semedo, a 30-year-old former Portuguese international, has been arrested for domestic violence, marking yet another troubling incident in his controversial career.
According to Portuguese media, the ex-Villarreal defender physically assaulted his partner on Saturday night and reportedly confined her in his house for several hours. He was arrested early Sunday morning and will spend the New Year holidays in prison.
In a statement, the Portuguese police confirmed: "Police arrested a 30-year-old citizen in the early hours of Sunday morning for the crime of domestic violence. The 30-year-old victim was attacked and threatened by her partner, who kept her in his house for several hours. She managed to file a complaint at the police station after escaping. The victim had several visible bruises and received emergency treatment in hospital."
Semedo, currently playing for Qatari club Al-Khor on loan from Al-Markhiya, is now facing the possibility of having his passport confiscated. This is not the first time the defender has been in trouble with the law.
In 2018, Semedo was arrested in Valencia for attempted murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and violent robbery, spending 142 days in prison before being released on a €30,000 bail. He was also arrested in 2021 and 2022 on charges of rape and domestic violence. These repeated offenses cast a shadow over his football career and raise serious concerns about his future both on and off the pitch.
