Maribor is closely monitoring Robert Ramšak, the young German international with Maribor roots, as the Bundesliga talent seeks senior football for next season.

Robert Ramšak, the talented 18-year-old forward currently playing for RB Leipzig's U19 team, has emerged as a target for Maribor. Though he represents Germany at U19 level and is attracting interest from Dinamo Zagreb, the Slovenian PrvaLiga giants are hoping his deep personal ties to Maribor could play a decisive role in a future transfer.

Ramšak is the son of a Slovenian father and a Croatian mother, and he speaks Slovenian fluently. His father is a former basketball player from Maribor, and both grandparents still live in the city. Every summer, Ramšak spends time in Maribor and has even trained in the vicinity of Ljudski vrt, Maribor’s iconic stadium. According to sources, the entire family supports NK Maribor, which has made the club cautiously optimistic about their chances.

“The family is violet through and through,” a source close to the club revealed, referring to Maribor’s traditional color.

While Dinamo Zagreb appear to be a more prominent suitor—especially after Zvonimir Boban’s involvement—Maribor has reportedly already initiated contact with Ramšak’s agent to explore the possibility of a move, especially if Leipzig decide to send him out on loan or release him this summer.

Ramšak joined Leipzig in 2023 from Bayern Munich’s academy, after a stellar year in which he helped Germany win both the U17 European and World Championships. However, a nagging injury has slowed his development, and he is only now regaining full fitness.

He has trained with Leipzig’s first team and maintains a good relationship with fellow Slovenian Benjamin Šeško, which could become relevant if Šeško leaves the club this summer. Leipzig’s Champions League status will likely influence their squad planning, and potentially, Ramšak’s future role.

International future remains open

Though Ramšak currently plays for Germany, his dual heritage means he remains eligible for both Slovenia and Croatia. Interestingly, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) contacted the player and his family two years ago, while the Slovenian FA (NZS) has yet to make a direct approach, despite his clear ties to the country.

As the summer window approaches, and Ramšak prepares for senior football, Maribor hope that family roots, familiarity with the city, and potential playing time might tip the balance in their favour—especially if Leipzig decide he needs more experience elsewhere.
