Real Madrid are pushing to sign Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer as Florentino Pérez continues reshaping the club’s defence.
Real Madrid are continuing their defensive rebuild, and another high-profile free transfer could soon be completed. According to reports from Spain, Ibrahima Konaté has become one of the club’s priority targets, and negotiations are already progressing toward an agreement.
President Florentino Pérez reportedly sees the French international as a perfect opportunity on the market, especially because the defender is now available without compensation after leaving Liverpool.
Madrid’s need for defensive reinforcements has become increasingly obvious. Recent seasons exposed major weaknesses at the back, while injuries and departures have left the squad lacking stability. David Alaba and Dani Carvajal have already departed after their contracts expired, while recurring injury problems affecting Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao repeatedly disrupted the defensive structure throughout the season.
That situation pushed Madrid toward another market opportunity they know well.
Over recent years, the club has built part of its success through free transfers. Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba and Kylian Mbappé all arrived without transfer fees, while the move for Trent Alexander-Arnold followed a similar pattern, although Madrid reportedly paid compensation to speed up his arrival.
Konaté could become the next name added to that list.
The 27-year-old reportedly rejected multiple attempts from Liverpool to extend his stay, opening the door for Madrid to move aggressively.
Kylian Mbappé is also believed to be playing an important role behind the scenes. Reports suggest the French superstar repeatedly recommended his international teammate to club officials, believing Konaté would fit perfectly into Madrid’s long-term plans. The pair have built a strong relationship during their years together with the French national team.
From a sporting perspective, the profile fits what Madrid want.
Standing 194 centimetres tall and weighing around 95 kilograms, Konaté combines physical dominance with elite-level experience. His style has often drawn comparisons with Rüdiger because of his aggression, pace and ability in physical duels.
For now, negotiations continue.
But all signs suggest Konaté is getting closer to the Santiago Bernabéu.
