Real Madrid’s interest in Martin Zubimendi could derail Arsenal’s transfer, with the Spanish club considering a €60 million swoop amid an aggressive summer spending spree.
Real Madrid are preparing to shake up the summer transfer market with a potential €200 million investment, and their aggressive strategy is already affecting rival clubs—most notably Arsenal.
The London club were reportedly close to finalising a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but that move is now under serious threat. According to Marca, Real Madrid have entered the race at the request of new manager Xabi Alonso, who sees Zubimendi as the ideal midfielder for his tactical setup.
Described as a player in the mould of Sergio Busquets, Zubimendi is widely regarded as one of the top defensive midfielders in La Liga. The 26-year-old has reportedly agreed on personal terms with Arsenal, but Real Madrid’s late intervention could change everything—especially if they decide to trigger his €60 million release clause.
This isn’t the first time Madrid have moved quickly to hijack major deals. They’ve already completed the €60 million signing of Dean Huijsen and are close to confirming Franco Mastantuon's €45 million arrival from River Plate, a player previously linked to PSG. The Spanish giants are also pursuing Benfica full-back Alvaro Carreras and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, with a further €100 million reserved for those deals.
If Real Madrid succeed in landing Zubimendi, it will mark yet another instance of the club using its financial power and allure to outmaneuver top Premier League sides in the transfer market.
