Luka Modric is reportedly joining Swansea City as a minority owner, surprising fans with a bold off-field investment while still playing for Real Madrid.
Luka Modric is poised to become a minority owner of Swansea City in a move described by fans as “extremely random” and unexpected, given the Croatian legend’s ongoing football career at Real Madrid.
According to reports, the 39-year-old will acquire a stake in the Championship club as part of the new ownership group led by Andy Coleman. Other investors include Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris, and Jason Cohen.
While the size of Modric’s stake and financial details remain undisclosed, the investment won’t impact his playing career. His contract with Real Madrid expires this summer, and the club has yet to decide whether to offer him a renewal.
The Croatian, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2018 and has collected six Champions League titles and four LaLiga crowns at the Bernabeu, joins the ownership group at a crucial time for the Welsh club.
Swansea have been out of the Premier League since 2018 and currently sit 12th in the Championship, eight points off the play-off spots with four games to go. They are also without a permanent manager following the March dismissal of Luke Williams, with Alan Sheehan in caretaker charge.
Coleman, who acquired majority control in November 2023, vowed to take Swansea back to the top flight by doing “non-Championship things” to grow revenue and build sustainability.
“We want to build a sustainable football club that eliminates a lot of the risks of the ever-changing economics of football,” Coleman said. “I’m terribly excited about what the future holds for us.”
