Real Madrid says it has no confirmation that Luka Modrić is buying a stake in Swansea City but insists the midfielder is free to do as he pleases with his money.
Real Madrid has reacted to widespread reports that Luka Modrić is preparing to purchase a minority stake in Swansea City, stating it has no official confirmation but stressing that the Croatian star is free to make personal financial decisions.
“I don’t know whether the report is true. He can do what he wants with his own money,” a club official told Hina on Monday, amid growing speculation in the British media.
The BBC and The Sun were among outlets reporting that the Real Madrid captain is set to invest in the Welsh Championship side, which currently sits 12th in England’s second tier. The club last played in the Premier League in 2018, making Modrić’s reported interest all the more surprising to many observers.
As of now, details around the size of the investment or Modrić’s future involvement in the club remain unclear. It is also unknown why the Croatian midfielder, with strong ties to Tottenham Hotspur, would choose Swansea as a business venture. According to Wales Online, the club may issue an official statement in the coming hours.
Modrić, who played in England from 2008 to 2012 before moving to Real Madrid, was not available for comment. He is currently preparing for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final return leg against Arsenal, following a 0-3 defeat in the first leg in London.
Though his contract expires in just over two months, Modrić has made no secret of his desire to extend his stay in Madrid, where he has become the most decorated player in the club’s history, with 28 trophies to his name.
He has also set up a real estate investment company in Madrid, where he plans to live with his family after retiring. The Croatian international has said he feels at home in the Spanish capital and is not ready to end his playing career just yet.
