Erling Haaland’s brace wasn’t enough as Real Madrid created countless chances and were ultimately rewarded with a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
The battles between Manchester City and Real Madrid have evolved into a modern Champions League classic, and tonight’s encounter was no exception. In the first leg of their playoff clash for a spot in the round of 16, both sides delivered a thrilling spectacle, with Real Madrid emerging victorious in dramatic fashion.
The visitors started brightly, creating several promising chances early on. The biggest opportunity fell to Ferland Mendy, who found himself in front of an empty net but could only fire his shot at Nathan Aké.
Manchester City had a quiet opening spell but took the lead in the 19th minute with their first real chance. Jack Grealish delivered a precise pass into the penalty area, Joško Gvardiol expertly used his body to set up Erling Haaland, and the Norwegian striker finished clinically to make it 1-0.
Real Madrid responded with increased pressure, and in the 60th minute, they got their equalizer. Kylian Mbappé scuffed his shot, but it was enough to catch Ederson off guard and roll into the net for 1-1. The momentum shifted, and just three minutes later, Fede Valverde came close to putting Madrid ahead, narrowly missing with a powerful shot from inside the penalty area.
Jude Bellingham tested Ederson in the 66th minute with another effort, but City survived the onslaught. Then, in the 77th minute, a controversial moment unfolded. Phil Foden won a penalty after being fouled on the edge of the box, and Haaland converted from the spot to restore City’s lead at 2-1.
But Real Madrid refused to be beaten. In the 86th minute, former City player Brahim Diaz pounced on a rebound after Ederson’s save to level the score at 2-2.
And then came the final blow. In stoppage time, Vinicius Junior set up Bellingham, who slotted home the dramatic winner for 3-2, sending the Madrid fans into ecstasy.
Once again, Real Madrid proved why they are the kings of the Champions League. Despite trailing twice, they found a way to win, leaving Pep Guardiola and Manchester City stunned.
