Real Madrid secured its fourth penalty shootout victory in the Champions League knockout stage, a feat unmatched by any other club in Europe.
Real Madrid’s legendary resilience in high-stakes moments was on display again as they eliminated Atlético Madrid on penalties, securing a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. This latest triumph further cements the club’s reputation for thriving under pressure, with history showing that when Madrid goes to a shootout, they often emerge victorious.
Unmatched record in European football
With this latest win, Real Madrid has now won four penalty shootouts in the Champions League knockout rounds, a record no other European club can match.
The streak began in 1987, when Madrid defeated Juventus in the European Cup round of 16. They repeated the feat in the 2016 Champions League final, beating Atlético Madrid. Last season, they eliminated Manchester City in the quarter-finals, and now, once again, Atlético Madrid fell to Los Blancos on penalties in the round of 16.
In addition to these four decisive Champions League shootouts, Real Madrid has also won two UEFA Super Cups on penalties, defeating Valencia and, once again, Atlético Madrid. The last time they lost a shootout in Europe was in the 2012 Champions League semi-finals, when Bayern Munich eliminated them.
This extraordinary record reinforces the notion that Real Madrid always finds a way to win, no matter the circumstances.
