Croatian champions Rijeka have made a statement ahead of their European campaign by signing Portuguese midfielder Tiago Dantas, a player who had previously been linked with Dinamo Zagreb.

The 24-year-old playmaker joins Rijeka on a free transfer after his contract with Osijek expired, and has signed a deal running until 2029. Dantas was one of the most highly regarded midfielders in the HNL last season and had been a priority target for Dinamo before Rijeka swooped in.

Dantas came through the youth academy at Benfica and made an appearance for the first team before going on loan spells at Bayern Munich, Tondela, PAOK, and AZ Alkmaar. He played 30 matches for Osijek last season and has earned 18 caps for Portugal’s U21 national team.

His arrival further underlines Rijeka’s ambition ahead of the Champions League qualifiers, with the club aiming to build on last season’s domestic success.
