Rio Ferdinand has moved to Dubai, criticising the UK government over tax spending and the state of public services, saying his decision was about values, not money.

Rio Ferdinand, the Manchester United legend, has revealed why he decided to leave the United Kingdom and start a new chapter of his life in Dubai — and his explanation comes with a harsh critique of the British government.

The 46-year-old former defender, who relocated with his wife Kate Ferdinand and their family in August, said he became disillusioned with how taxpayer money was being used and with the state of public services, particularly healthcare.

‘When things are falling apart, you start asking questions’

Speaking to LBC, Ferdinand said his departure was motivated by frustration rather than financial gain — even though he now lives in a tax-free country.

“If things like the health service and other public sectors worked perfectly, people wouldn’t mind paying taxes,” he said. “But when things are falling apart, you sit there wondering whether all the tax money really goes to things that help people. That’s a big question — and I think many of us already know the answer.”

‘I’m patriotic, but this is a new chapter’

Ferdinand emphasised that he still loves his country but needed change. “I love England, and I’m patriotic in that sense, but this move is a new chapter in my life,” he explained.

Last season, Ferdinand also stepped away from his punditry role at TNT Sports, saying the move gave him more time for his family. “My family sees me a lot more now, and we spend quality time together — that’s been a great thing for me,” he said.

Luxury life in Dubai

The family have settled in a £6.5 million villa in the exclusive Al Barari community, complete with seven bedrooms, a private pool, a home cinema, and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Dubai skyline.

Before relocating, the Ferdinands lived in a multimillion-pound home in Bromley, southeast London, and were frequent visitors to Dubai, one of their favourite holiday destinations.
