Barcelona, once humbled at Benfica's Estadio da Luz in 2021, returns to Lisbon with renewed optimism, inspired by their teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

The Catalan giants, currently second in their Champions League group behind Liverpool, need a win to confirm progression to the last 16 and avoid the new play-off stage.

Two years ago, under Ronald Koeman, Barcelona's European dreams unraveled in Lisbon, culminating in Koeman's dismissal. His successor, Xavi Hernandez, stabilized the ship but couldn’t fully restore the club's glory. Now, under Hansi Flick, Barcelona are showcasing flashes of their best football, driven by a crop of rising stars like Yamal.

A Symbol of Revival

At just 17, Yamal has become the poster boy for Barcelona's resurgence. The winger, often compared to Lionel Messi for his skill and vision, has tallied nine goals and 13 assists in 25 appearances this season. His contribution was pivotal in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, cementing his status as one of football's brightest talents.

Barcelona teammate Gavi, himself a standout performer, lavished praise on Yamal, declaring: "Well, after Lionel Messi, he's the best."

A Team on the Rise

Barcelona’s progress this season is underscored by landmark victories. The team has defeated Champions League holders Real Madrid twice in domestic competitions and dispatched Bayern Munich in the group stage, signaling their return to Europe's elite.

The Blaugrana’s success hasn’t been without challenges. Financial struggles persist, highlighted by the Dani Olmo registration debacle. Yet, on the pitch, Flick has cultivated a team blending youth and experience. While Yamal shines on the wing, Raphinha has also excelled, netting 20 goals and contributing 11 assists across 29 games. In midfield, Gavi and Pedri are thriving, while 17-year-old center-back Pau Cubarsi has anchored the defense.

The Yamal Effect

Barcelona's dependence on Yamal has been evident in his absence. Without him in the starting XI, the team has faltered, suffering defeats to Osasuna, Real Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid, among others. With Yamal in the lineup, Barcelona boasts a record of 19 wins, two draws, and just two losses this season.

Coach Hansi Flick highlighted Yamal’s impact after his commanding performance against Real Betis: "In great matches, you see big talent, and he's showed it many times. He's on a really good path."

The Road Ahead

With 10 years since their last Champions League triumph, Barcelona are determined to reassert their status among Europe’s elite. A victory against Benfica will not only seal their place in the last 16 but also reaffirm their aspirations of lifting the trophy for a sixth time.

As Yamal continues to dazzle, Barcelona fans dare to dream of a bright future, led by the young prodigy who has already proven he belongs on football’s grandest stage.
