River Plate expands Monumental Stadium to 84,567 seats for the Copa Libertadores final. Renovations include a new screen, exclusive suite, and plans for a multi-sport facility.
River Plate’s Estadio Monumental will showcase its recent renovations when it hosts the Copa Libertadores final between Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo this Saturday at 17:00. As the most important club competition in South America reaches its climax, fans will witness the stadium's new enhancements, including increased capacity and modern features.
The most notable improvement is the completion of work on the upper tier, where the stands have been expanded to connect the sections. While one of these expansions debuted a few weeks ago, the remaining three will be inaugurated during the final. With these updates, the stadium's capacity has increased to 84,567 spectators, solidifying it as one of the largest and most iconic football venues on the continent.
The expansions primarily impacted the San Martín and Belgrano Alta stands, while the Sívori and Centenario sections remain unchanged. Although the upgrades will initially serve the fans of Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo, River fans will have the opportunity to enjoy the changes next Wednesday during their home game against San Lorenzo in the Liga Profesional.
New features and technology
In addition to the expanded seating, the Monumental has unveiled a new and larger screen, measuring 25.6 meters wide by 14.4 meters high, offering significantly improved visual quality. Furthermore, a new exclusive suite and paddock area have been built to meet Conmebol’s requirements for hosting the Libertadores final.
Broader modernization efforts
River Plate’s commitment to upgrading the Monumental extends beyond the stadium itself. The club has undertaken extensive renovations, including the construction of a multi-sport facility for disciplines like handball, which previously lacked a dedicated venue in Núñez. Other projects include:
- A new central hall, soon to be renamed the "Hall of Shields."
- Improved indoor and outdoor barbecue areas.
- A new parking facility with direct access to Avenida Lugones, ensuring quicker exits on matchdays.
