River Plate had the highest average home attendance in world football in 2025 with 85,018 fans per match. A major stadium expansion to 100,000 seats is scheduled to begin in 2026.
River Plate has once again topped the world in terms of fan turnout, with an average attendance of 85,018 spectators per home match in 2025 — the highest globally, according to Transfermarkt.
This marks the **third consecutive year** that River has led the global attendance charts, a feat made possible by the stunning atmosphere at the Monumental stadium, which has become South America's largest venue after recent renovations.
Borussia Dortmund followed in second place with 81,365 fans per game, while Bayern Munich (75,000) and Real Madrid (73,658) rounded out the top four. But none could match River Plate’s consistent sellouts.
The Monumental’s current capacity — exactly 85,018 seats — meant the club operated at full capacity for most of the 2025 season, despite underwhelming results on the pitch. Under coach Marcelo Gallardo, River failed to make an impact in either the domestic league or the Copa Libertadores.
“This level of loyalty is extraordinary. Even in a disappointing year, the fans filled the stadium week after week,” club sources said.
Now, River Plate’s new management is preparing for an even more ambitious leap. In 2026, work is set to begin on a massive expansion project that will increase capacity to approximately 100,000 seats and include a full stadium roof. Crucially, the club plans to carry out the works without halting matches at the venue.
The upgrade, expected to finish by 2028, would place Más Monumental among the largest stadiums in world football, both in size and status. It is already confirmed as the venue for Argentina’s opening match at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond football, Monumental has increasingly become a hub for major events, from international concerts to national sporting spectacles, solidifying its role as one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.
