Roberto Martínez has emerged as a candidate for the Manchester United job, with Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto De Zerbi also under consideration despite Michael Carrick’s strong interim run.

Manchester United continue to assess their managerial future, even as Michael Carrick delivers strong results as caretaker at Old Trafford.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, one of the names discussed internally is Roberto Martínez, the current Portugal national team coach.

Martínez remains under contract until 31 July 2026, which follows the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Reports suggest he could leave earlier, with José Mourinho linked to the Portugal role.

The Spanish coach brings strong Premier League experience. He previously managed Swansea City, Wigan Athletic, and Everton. His biggest achievement in England came in 2013, when he guided Wigan to a shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Jacobs revealed more details on The United Stand podcast.

"One of the names mentioned to me within Manchester United is Roberto Martínez. He is expected to leave the Portugal national team because José Mourinho is set to take over. I don't think his style would put him at the top of the list, but he is certainly on the list, along with Nagelsmann and De Zerbi."

Julian Nagelsmann, currently managing Germany, and Roberto De Zerbi also remain under consideration.

Despite Carrick’s positive run, United’s leadership has yet to make a final decision. The coming weeks will shape whether stability continues or a new era begins at Old Trafford.
