Roy Keane slammed Trent Alexander-Arnold after Real Madrid’s loss to Bayern, blaming him for defensive mistakes and calling his performance unacceptable at the Champions League level.
Real Madrid suffered a 1-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, and the spotlight quickly shifted to their defensive problems.
Although Kylian Mbappé gave the Spanish giants hope with a goal in the 74th minute, the performance at the back raised serious concerns.
No one was more direct than Roy Keane.
The former Manchester United captain spoke as a pundit on CBS and singled out Trent Alexander-Arnold as the main culprit for Luis Díaz’s goal.
"Listen, I'm really sick of it. It's always the same story in big games. Everyone keeps talking about his passing, but what about the basics of the game? With the defense? At this level, in the Champions League, you just can't turn yourself off like that," said Keane.
He then pushed even harder.
"That's a rookie mistake. Letting Luis Díaz walk past you like you don't exist? Come on. He defends like he's never played right-back in his life. Big games require big defenders, and he's a long way from that right now," he added.
The defeat leaves Real Madrid with work to do ahead of the return leg in Munich, but the criticism aimed at their defensive line is already growing louder.
